In Maharashtra, names are written in two scripts — Latin and Devanagari. Someone typing “Patil” should still find a directory entry recorded in Devanagari as “पाटील,” and searching “देशमुख” should surface an entry saved in Latin script as “Deshmukh,” just as well.
